Synopsis:

Before America Singer met Prince Maxon . . .
Before she entered the Selection . . .
She was in love with a boy named Aspen Leger.

Don't miss this digital original novella set in the captivating world of Kiera Cass's #1 New York Times bestselling Selection trilogy. This brand new 64-page story begins just after the group of Selected girls is narrowed down to the Elite and is told from Aspen's point of view. The Guard also features a teaser to The One, the thrilling conclusion to The Selection trilogy.

My Review:

As I am a Maxon fan, I didn't think I would like this story, but I did. It is told from Aspen's point of view. You are able to get into his head a little bit and understand more than you did in the other stories. That being said, I am still a Maxon fan.

I find Aspen to be very selfish. The whole time he is trying to find ways to keep her in love with him, even when it can have horrible consequences. He is making America's life a mess instead of letting her heart decide on her own. The whole book seemed to be him thinking of America and how to keep her. I felt like he made the mistake in the first place and now he just needs to let it play out. If she picks him, she does, but he needs to let her be the one to pick.

Now that my rant is out of the way, I did like the way he treated the staff though. He went out of his way to be sweet to the maids and make them feel like they mattered. He does have a side of him that is very sweet and it makes you able to see why America fell in love with him in the first place.

The main reason that I liked the story wasn't for America at all, it was the reason that I got to see the behind the scenes. There were things that happened in The Elite that you wanted to know what happened away from America. This book helps you know a little more of what was happening. It was nice reading this book and being able to keep more into the story so I can go right into book 3 to devour it with all the details :)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme brought to you at The Broke and the Bookish!! Each week we will be releasing a top ten book related list for you all to enjoy!

I didn't know what to do for this week. Freebies are always hard for me to pick. I decided to put out some books that I plan to read for my Memory Lane Monday posts for the next few times.

Memory Lane Monday is a weekly feature Kristalyn at The Sarcastic Palmtree and I started. We wanted to find a way to be able to re-read books that meant so much to us while still keeping up with new releases. We came up with Memory Lane Monday where we get to do two re-reads a month. We are having so much fun with it! If it sounds like something you would like to participate in, Click Here for more information!!

1. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares
I read these back when I was in high school. I really enjoyed them but they made me sad because I didn't have the type of friendship with anyone like in this book. I now have a couple friends from my blog that definitely are true friends like this to me (Kristalyn & Amanda). So I'm excited to re-read them now that I have good friends to see the meaning I take from them this time around!

108188531185740813536860
2. Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James
I know I will probably get crap for this, but I enjoyed these books. Not for the sexual elements. I liked reading the love story unfold. It was what kept be reading through them. I would like to re-read them again and watch it unfold all over again :)

34562722821332802316
599615364792596527740
3. Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead
I read this a few months ago, but I am already having Dimitri withdrawals. I think I will be having to revisit this very soon!

25668315829963777732
87557766752378
4. The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
I read this back in August in order to be able to watch the movie. While I hated the movie, I really enjoyed the series. Since the last book in the series is coming out on the day this post is up, I want to be able to re-read the whole series again to finish it all up!

5664985
5. Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen
I loved this book when I read it a few years ago. I watched for it to come out and bought it the first day it was released. I devoured the pages. I've read several other Sarah Dessen books, but to me this is her best one. I would love to re-read it this summer!

13051956
6. When in Doubt, Add Butter by Beth Harbison
I love cooking stories, but I first picked this book up because of the cover. I mean look at those cupcakes!! Once I read the synopsis I had to have it. I asked for it for Christmas a couple years back. I luckily got it and spent part of January reading it. It was fantastic. It had cooking and a love story, how could I not love it! It's getting time to revisit it again :)

1436581
7. The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
I got little Ainsley to read this book recently because I loved it when I was little. Now that she read it and loved it, I want to go re-read it again. I remember some of it but not all of it, so I will be super fun to re-read it now that I am older!

633966477919971063776612751687
8. Hush, Hush Series by Becca Fitzpatrick
I read this back when it was only Hush, Hush and Crescendo. Silence came out shortly after so I just picked it up and read it without re-reading the first two. Once Finale came out, it was so far in between that I forgot pretty much everything. I now need to re-read the whole series in order to read the last book and finally figure out what happens!

50560846801582691890912846479
9. Wings Series by Aprilynne Pike
This being my first faerie book ever, it has a special place in my heart. I want to re-read it to appreciate it all over again. I've read several Fae books since this one, but this one being my first, I can't ever let it go!

38572
10. Last Bite by Nancy Verde Barr
This was the first cooking book I ever read. I don't remember how I found it, but I think I was just looking in the book store and came across it. I read this back in high school, so it was a little older than what I normally read. I have always been a food network junkie though, so I had to read it since it was a story about cooking. It's been so long I don't remember much of it, just that I loved it. I want to re-read it now to have it be like a new story all over again!

My Teaser:

" He was quiet for a moment, and I realized that we'd come to a very serious crossroad. We'd implied so many things, but we couldn't go on like this for much longer. Even if we ended up together, these moments of insecurity would haunt us. "

Memory Lane Monday #9

This is a new weekly meme that Kristalyn over at The Sarcastic Palmtree and I, Amber at Paradise of Pages, came up with. We have been wanting to re-read some of our favorites but feel overwhelmed by all the other new books coming out that our re-reads get put to the side. That is how we came up with this meme, we decided we don't want to put them aside anymore, so we will be taking turns putting up our reviews on the re-reads we do throughout the month. This does not mean we won't keep up with recent releases as well, it just means we will make more time for those we have read before as well.

__________________________________________________

So here is how this meme will work:

  • Each week the co-hosts will trade off with recapping when it is a re-read or what they have heard so far about the book and the other co-host will put up their review.
  • The participants can read anything that they remember reading in the past, or something that they have wanted to read that has been around for a while and just haven't gotten around to reading it yet for whatever reason.
  • Participants can decide if they want to recap the book before reading it or just put up a review of what they read.
  • Anyone can join in, just please link back to our blogs as well as add your name to the linky so we can hop around and see what everyone is reading.
  • Please put our banner on your post as well, so we all look the same!
  • We ask you kindly to follow BOTH of our blogs.
  • Most importantly remember to just have fun! :)

__________________________________________________

We will be providing each week a linky that you will be able to also link your posts for us to view. All we ask is for you to put up our banner as well as a link back to BOTH hosts on your post.

10507293The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Release Date: April 24th, 2012
Publisher: Harper Teen
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Pages: 327
Format: Paperback, Bought

Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository |

Synopsis:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My Review:

I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book the second time around. I read it about a year ago, so it wasn't too long since I last read it. I was thinking maybe I would remember a lot more than I did. I was mixing things that happened between this book and the second book.

I also was Team Aspen when I first started the book a year ago, now I am Team Maxon. I was slowly pushed to his side in the second book. So this was my first time reading it with a different guy I wanted her with. I found I didn't like Aspen from the start this time (big shocker). I knew what he ends up doing later on and that made it hard to like him even from the beginning.

This is a book that is hard to like characters that you know do something later on in the series. When I read it the first time I was better off with liking the characters individually and getting to know them a little bit. As I read this time, I just wasn't able to do that because I knew something happened later. Though I was able to put those characters aside and focus on Maxon more this time.

I followed him through the pages and go to know him a lot better than I did the first time. I also read the novella to the series, The Prince, so I was also in his head a bit to understand him even more. I liked that I read it first before the re-read because it made certain things make more sense.

I still gave this book 5 stars around this time, but I do know I was rushing through this book more. Since I had a more fresh mind of what happened, I was trying to rush through it all so I could get to the last book in the series. I loved the book even with all that. I just know I wanted to read it faster.

America didn't annoy me as much this time around. I know what she is going through a little better now so she didn't annoy me quite as much. Her indecisiveness when I read it the first time really wanted me to give up on it for a little bit. After I got to know her more when I read it the first time I understood. This time I understood from the beginning and I was able to focus more on her personality. She is a pretty wonderful girl and I can see why she has so many after her.

Maxon has my heart this time around for sure. The poor guy, even with being a prince, doesn't have the greatest life. He is lonely and it didn't seem that way the first time. I felt like America thought as well, that he was gonna be some stuck up guy with lots of money and a huge ego. He is the exact opposite. He does have a lot of money, but that doesn't make him who he is. In fact, you would have never guessed. I am so glad I got to re-read this and get to see who he really is.

I am going to wait a few years before I re-read this because I want to see how I will be years from now, if it will be like reading it for the first time. I want to see how my reacts will be with so much time in between. I read this a little too close to the last time, but I had to do it to make sure I remembered everything for the last book. I am glad I did. I still forgot certain things or mixed them between the books. Now I know for sure how everything happened :)

Review -- The Prince

15820748The Prince
Author: Kiera Cass
Release Date: March 5th, 2013
Publisher: Harper Teen
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Pages: 80
Format: Paperback bind up, bought

Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository |

Synopsis:

Before thirty-five girls were chosen to compete in the Selection...

Before Aspen broke America's heart...

There was another girl in Prince Maxon's life...

Don't miss this thrilling 64-page original novella set in the world of the New York Times bestselling novel The Selection. Also features a teaser to The Elite, Kiera Cass's hotly anticipated sequel to The Selection.

My Review:
I didn't know what to think when it came to this book. Since I read the first two books last year, I already knew most of what was going to happen. But this book is from Maxon's mind, not America's.

I was interested to see the other side, even for the few short pages that the novella had. I was already team Maxon, but if I wasn't before, this book would have surely turned me to that team. He is such a sincere guy. It is nice to read a character that is royalty be so down to Earth. As you read in his pages about his father, that is who you would expect him to be as well. To see him not be that way is very nice and refreshing.

The book starts out about a week before the selection starts and goes to the second day into the competition. It gives you enough to see the person Maxon really is and know that he isn't faking anything in the other books. The sweet guy you meet there is the real guy that Maxon is.

I could have kept reading from Maxon's side for the whole rest of the series, but sadly it had to end. I now can't wait to start my re-read on this trilogy and finally find out who wins in the end.
