Memory Lane Monday #27 -- Mutilate My Heart by Emily Godwin Review

This is a new weekly meme that Kristalyn over at The Sarcastic Palmtree and I, Amber at Paradise of Pages, came up with. We have been wanting to re-read some of our favorites but feel overwhelmed by all the other new books coming out that our re-reads get put to the side. That is how we came up with this meme, we decided we don't want to put them aside anymore, so we will be taking turns putting up our reviews on the re-reads we do throughout the month. This does not mean we won't keep up with recent releases as well, it just means we will make more time for those we have read before as well.

So here is how this meme will work:

  • Each week the co-hosts will trade off with recapping when it is a re-read or what they have heard so far about the book and the other co-host will put up their review.
  •  The participants can read anything that they remember reading in the past, or something that they have wanted to read that has been around for a while and just haven't gotten around to reading it yet for whatever reason.
  • Participants can decide if they want to recap the book before reading it or just put up a review of what they read.
  • Anyone can join in, just please link back to our blogs as well as add your name to the linky so we can hop around and see what everyone is reading.
  • Please put our banner on your post as well, so we all look the same!
  • We ask you kindly to follow BOTH of our blogs.
  • Most importantly remember to just have fun! :)

We will be providing each week a linky that you will be able to also link your posts for us to view. All we ask is for you to put up our banner as well as a link back to BOTH hosts on your post.

Punk rock band Mutilated Arteries has been seventeen-year-old Becca's world (aka obsession) for the last year. When the band schedules a concert in her hometown, she and her best friend Carli are the first ones in line to buy tickets. The night is everything she expects it to be and more, especially after making friends with the new super-cute bassist, Sketch.

Becca's mom warns her not to fall for a rock star because rock stars are always on the road - or they die in a plane crash, like her mom's favorite band did twenty-something years ago. But after the band's tour bus breaks down and they're stuck hanging out in Roizen Hills for a week, it's hard for Becca not to fall for Sketch and his caricature drawings and toxic green eyes.

Becca knows Sketch is leaving as soon as the bus is fixed, and she can't be his fan-turned-girlfriend anyway because of the lead singer's "No Girlfriends" rule. Plus, there's something strange about the guys that Becca can't quite decipher... like how they won't reveal their real names, their always-changing odd appearances, and the guitarist's obsession with blood and zombies. Still, Becca wants nothing more than for Sketch to mutilate her heart...but it just might not be in a way she expects.

My Review:

Read my recap for this book Here.

The first time I read through this book I had NO idea that it was considered paranormal. It read like any other contemporary I have read, so I was pretty confused. The twist comes at the end of the story. Now that I knew what was going to happen, it was so easy for me to pick out all the little hints throughout the pages. I actually felt stupid that I didn't pick up on it the first time around.

I loved this book even more this time around. I have also read more of the Godwin sisters books, so I was able to pull more references from the other books out as well. I was like HEY!! I know that!! It's rather fun to be able to read their books and feel like you are in a scavenger hunt! The more you read by them the more references you get! I am starting to feel like I am a Godwin sister expert!!

I loved Sketch just like I did the last time around. I knew more of his personality this time around so I swooned even more. He is such a sweetheart and so reserved. Once you learn more about him you feel horrible for what he has went through. His quote "you make me feel alive" hit me twice as hard because I knew his past and I know his present as well.

I also liked watching the other band members open up. They have a closely guarded secret, but by the end of the book they were all laughing and joking around, despite their "no girlfriend" and "no getting close to the fans" rule. Nightmare's comment at the end makes you want to say awwww. You know he was missing something and knew there was nothing he could do to change it.

The characters all have a totally different personality yet they all fit, except maybe Maddie. I didn't like her. She was bitchy (excuse my language) and very self centered. I couldn't stand her and was usually saying something like "Becca why did you invite her! You know she is a party pooper!!" But I know how it is when you feel guilty for something!

This book is great and makes me want to find my own version of Mutilated Arteries to listen to! Sadly I am more of a 90s girl than I am into rock, but hey maybe someone will pop out at me :) I suggest all of you give this book a chance, it is a light and quick read that will make you want to keep reading more from the Godwin Sisters!

We will be back next week with our review or recap!
