Discussion: Kindle Unlimited, good or bad?

So I just went to go onto Amazon to check out the price of a movie I can't seem to find anywhere in town, when I saw on the main page something about Kindle Unlimited.

It caught my eye because it had things that looked kinda like paper hats as well as paper boats, but one of the main boat/hat things was of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone cover. I wanted to see what it was about.

I saw that it is where you pay 9.99 a month and you can read any of the kindle books, as many as you want, for the one price each month. They also let you listen to as many audio books that you want throughout the month.

I am not one to like to read on a Kindle. I prefer to read a real copy of a book. But for the price I am paying to buy books anymore, especially ones that I find I don't like so much, this is the way cheaper way to go. I have 3 bookshelves each with 5 shelves on each one, and they are all full. I am in need of about to buy a new one just to be able to support my book buying habit.

If I get the Kindle Unlimited, I would be able to save a lot of money and buy only the books that I really enjoy in a hard copy. I have this problem where if I buy a book, I don't want to get rid of it because of the money I spent, if I read them on the Kindle, I could screen what I buy in hard copies. So, the logic makes sense.

My question here is, even though it is going to save me money, how badly is this going to hurt authors? This just seems like a bad deal for them because I don't see them making much off this deal. I feel like if there are readers like most of us here in the blogging communities that read many books within a month, how much money is this going to take from the authors. Is this going to make authors think twice before publishing on ereaders anymore? I am really curious about this.

Authors out there, if you are reading this, I would love to hear your side and opinion on this matter before I continue on with possibly buying a kindle. Fellow Readers, how do you feel about this new addition to the ereader world??

Should I buy a kindle and try to fit in with the ereader craze finally, or continue on buying books as I have been??

  1. This doesn't interest me for the foreseeable future at least because I have so many kindle books already I need to get to. Also, if you have an iPad (which I think you told me once you do) just download the kindle app, don't get a kindle. :) I also think this can't be good for the authors which isn't right. I want to know how they plan to pay them.

    1. I do have an ipad. I also have the kindle app on it already and read my review books on it but it hurts my eyes. I've been eyeballing the paper display kindle for a while. It's cheap and they now have this thing where you can make payments on one with no interest. The author thing is what worries me. There isn't too much to choose from right now in the YA department of it.

  2. Yeah this worries me for the authors too. Because how will that work out. Are you simply borrowing books or are you literally able to keep as many ebooks you want in a month for the $9.99.

I really have no interest. I still prefer my real books despite having zero room for them! ;) The woes of a bibliophile/book hoarder/reader!

I was looking at it myself and couldn't figure out if they're going to do it like a library system, because I know with Amazon Prime, I'm able to "borrow" a kindle book. I think it's like one at a time, then I return it and can download another. I haven't used that feature yet myself but will plan to eventually. Just want to clear up some of my physical books first.

I think this might hurt authors. But like I said, I don't think I fully understand how it works to read as many books you want for ten dollars a month. If it's going to be like a library system where you don't actually own the ebooks, but can read them. But then yeah, that too could still hurt authors I guess.

I know I won't be doing it personally, just because I'm still a real book kind of girl!
