Discussion -- Book Buying Bans

I have seen so many people out there go on book buying bans....and not being able to keep to it.

With that said, I have been buying SOOOO many books. It has become an obsession. I have been trying to buy all the series and books that I am behind on reading. This is making it even harder though to keep up with reading them all. My poor shelves are 80% of books that I have yet to read. I still keep buying more though.

I am going to try somewhat of a book buying ban. It isn't a full ban. I think that if I make myself not buy any books that I will end up cracking one day and blowing a whole paycheck to make up for it. So I have decided to allow myself one book, yes, only one book a paycheck. This will give me only 2 books a month I am allowed to buy. That way I still feel like I can get books, but it will severely cut down on how many fly onto my shelves that I am having trouble reading.

I'm also going to try to read 2-3 books every paycheck as well. If I read more than that, great! If not, it will at least allow me to cut down on my TBR list a little more than what I am putting onto the shelves. I can start working on some of the series I need to read. I am also going to use part of the reading time to re-read some of the series I have been dying to. I have just felt obligated to read the ones I am buying first. I wasn't able to really re-read anything because of it.

I am hoping this will be a good solution to all the books I am buying and help me get more reading done. It is more of an incentive for me to read more and not get so overwhelmed with what is on my shelves. Now I just have to have the willpower to keep up with my "book buying ban" and not go past what I am allowing myself. I also hope this will make me not so broke all the time. I spend a big chunk of my paychecks on books and it isn't allowing me much money to spend it on anything else. My poor feet need a pedicure!

What do you all think about it? Have you done a ban before? Do you think allowing myself to only get one a paycheck will help?

  1. Good luck! I defninitely know how hard it is not to buy books. I have a giant stack of books that still hasn't been read. What I've been doing lately is just not going to the mall as much, so that I don't see the bookstore that much which lets me buy less frequently.
Either way, I know you can do this! Good luck ;)

    1. It is definitely hard. I want to buy more, my shelves are just getting too full with books I haven't read. I'm doing this to challenge myself!

  2. The first time I started a book buying ban, I had just discovered ebooks and while I stopped buying physical books for a few months, I easily bought 20-30 ebooks in that time. Because who would know? *sigh* I think your idea of 1 book per paycheque is a smart one!

    1. thank you! I liked the idea too! Luckily I don't like e-books very much so that will spare me. I like to turn my own pages and be able to put the book on my shelves when I am done!

  3. Never thought about doing a ban before, because I really enjoy reading and I don't want to have to limit myself. With my schedule this year, I think I'm going to be buying about 10 books a month. But, really, I think books are pretty cheap (especially on Amazon, where I tend to get the majority of my stuff) and I'm lucky to not have to pay rent right now (I've just graduated, so am living with my parents); which means more money for books!

Good luck on your ban though. You have more willpower than me lol!

    1. my will power isn't the greatest. That is why I am trying to only buy 2 books a month. just so I atleast feel like I am buying something so it won't be so hard. I hope that I am right about me feeling better so I won't go crazy and buy hundreds of dollars worth at a time! I wish I was rent free. Sadly I am off on my own and got bills to pay :(

  4. I'm on a ban of sorts as well. I've recently made the switch from work at home mom to stay at home mom, so we have less money. Hubby is giving me a set amount every 3 months so that I can splurge. Good luck!

    1. Good luck on being a stay at home mommy. I hope when I have a kiddo one day that I will be able to stay at home too! RIght now I am just trying to get financially stable and the hubs to be wants to graduate college first, which is understandable. Atleast you get an amount every few months so you don't feel too deprived!

  5. I think this is a great idea, cause at least you're still getting some books you want but you're not spending all your money! I hope you can get to the books you want to reread. I love rereading my favorite books but I haven't been able to do it recently because there are so many series I need to start, like Divergent lol. I've never done a book buying ban and I honestly don't think I could fulfill one, especially since every time I'm at Target the book section always draws me in

  6. I'm not on an official ban, but I have been buying fewer books lately. I just have so many that unless it's something I have to read now, I can wait. I do make an exception for free books on Amazon because I don't know if they will remain free. If I end up not reading them, I haven't wasted the money anyway.

  7. That's a good idea! I've only bought three books this month so far (one was only $3 though) so I'm really proud of myself!
