Synopsis:

After seventeen-year-old Haley Sullivan meets a mysterious stranger who plays by his own rules, she's more than determined to learn every trick of the trade from the master himself. But her dream-chasing mentor disappears after that night, and according to the local newspapers, he's been dead for years. Knowing he's very much alive, Haley enlists best friend Linzi to join her on a scavenger-hunt-style road trip that ultimately lands them in the surf town of Crescent Cove, California. Mystery guy is no mystery here, though – he's Colby Taylor, the west coast's biggest professional surfer.

If Haley wants to talk to the wave rider again, she'll have to get past his four intimidating bodyguards who are highly skilled in the business of sending starstruck fangirls back to where they belong. Haley is up for the challenge if it means chasing her dreams and escaping the perfectly corporate future that's been planned for her. But dealing with these bodyguards isn't exactly what Haley imagined it'd be. Sure, being thrown off a jet ski sucks, but falling in love with one of them might just be worse.

My Review:

Haley is at a party that her parents made me come to. She is bored and really wanting to go home...that is until she sees him across the room. The mysterious guy that has black hair and he is calling to her across the room. They set out on a night that Haley can't forget. She is so excited to see him the next day, but in his place is a single paper star waiting for her. She can't seem to find out what went wrong so she goes to her parents to ask about him. She finds out he is dead, but she knows he isn't. She then goes on a chase cross country to find the mysterious guy that she doesn't even know his name. As she starts to look for him, she finds out that he is the famous surfer, Colby Taylor from the west coast. Now she has to find out if he is the guy she thought he was....

As I read this, I was thinking I wasn't going to like it so much. Sorry Nikki, please hear me out. I read American Girl on Saturn by her, and it was my top book I read in 2013. I loved it so much. So I thought that there would be no way to love her writing as much as I loved AGoS. I thought wrong. AGoS has officially been bumped down my list of favorite books. Chasing Forever Down took the number one spot. There is so much thought and detail put into the book.

This book spends most of it's time in California, only a small portion of it is set in another place. You learn to follow where she is, picture the places she is at, and get a good glimpse of all the people as she seems them.

Haley is so calm and down to earth. Even as she struggles with her emotions sometimes, she still spends the time to get to know all the guys. She thinks she is doing it for a different reason, but she soon has a special place in her heart for every one of them. I love how she wasn't the jealous type. She had a few spots here or there, but even those are validated.

I wanted to pick up and go to the town myself and become part of the surfer family. A.J. cracked me up the whole time. He seemed to always get in trouble but found an inner peace when he runs into Haley. There is also Reed, Miles, Topher, Alston, and Vin that you also learn to love.

I learned through this book don't judge a book by it's cover. I know we have all heard this our whole lives, but in this book it is definitely apparent. Nikki does a great job to get you to see a character a certain way and then spends the rest of the story helping you change your mind and get you to see how the character really is.

I didn't even want to start reading another book after this just because I wanted to spend the rest of the night re-living the pages and all the characters. I very rarely do this. I can usually move on pretty easily, but I couldn't with this book. It was fantastic.

You go into this book thinking that it is going to end a certain way. Nikki makes sure that her book isn't predictable though. The book ends in a way that I didn't even have on my radar. I liked that about the story. It keeps you on your toes and makes the ending that much better.

It is such a cute and sweet read but there is also a lot of hidden messages within the story. I don't know if this was intentional or if I just took it that way, but either way, I'm glad I found them. I have fallen more in love with Nikki's writing and who she is as a person.

I hope all of you run out and download a copy of her book so you can love it and experience it just like I did. You won't be sorry if you do! This is a book that I don't think I would ever be able to forget, no matter how many other books I read!

Couldn't Put it Down!!

Guest Post

I never set out to be a surfer fangirl. When I wrote Chasing Forever Down, I had zero knowledge about surfing. Even after publishing a book set in the surf world, following professional surfers on Twitter, and doing tons of research for the rest of the series, I still wasn’t a fangirl – until John John Florence happened.

After publishing this book, I felt like I needed to at least “look legit” online, so I followed a lot of professional surfers on Twitter. I followed the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals), and I skimmed over the results from each competition as they live tweeted events and flooded my Twitter feed.

Then one night in early June, I was reading off rankings to my sister Emily, and it went something like this – “Right now, for the World Title, it’s neck and neck between Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater, who is basically the THE surfer. *looks at list* And then Parko, Taj, Jordy, JJF, who the #$@% is JJF, Oh my God John John Florence!” (Read that quickly, in one breath, for full effect.)

Emily then stared at me like I needed padded walls, but she didn’t have much of a chance to speak because the words were still flowing. “OMG do you know what this means? I know who JJF is! I mean, not really because I have no clue who the hell he is, but I know that JJF is John John Florence, and that means I’ve learned this subconsciously while scrolling through Twitter, and now I’m totally legit and can say I’m a surfer fangirl without being a fraud because I know that JJF is John John Florence!”

And that was it. I decided in that very moment that it was fate. John John Florence was meant to be “my surfer,” and I was meant to be #TeamJJF. So far, it’s been a very lovely obsessionship, and once March 2014 rolls around and the ASP picks back up, you can guarantee that my constant retweets and squee-ish tweets will flood Twitter like massive waves.

 Because that’s what fangirls do.

Excerpt

“This is my fault,” Reed says. “I’m the one who lied and sent you out with A.J. today. It’s just…you’ve gotta understand. No one has ever ridden with A.J. Most girls don’t come back around after they meet him, and if I’d thought for a second that you’d really get on there with him, I wouldn’t have sent you out there.”
“I’m not most girls,” I say. I push him out of my path with my shoulder, but he spins around and stops me again.
“I know that. Most girls don’t care about paper stars. I know there’s more to it with you, but I can’t do anything about it,” he says.
This time I don’t try to leave. I don’t know what he knows about North Carolina or paper stars or Colby Taylor’s trip back home to interrupt my boring little world, but he knows I’m here to find surfer boy.
“You’re just doing your job, right? Keeping the naïve teenage tourists away from your guy? Well, you can tell Colby Taylor he needs to think about that before he drags a random girl off to watch cover bands and talk about chasing forever and then leaves paper stars behind because he’s too damn scared to show up the next day like he said he would,” I say.
The summer sun blazes through my veins again. Warmth burns my cheeks, and I bet I look like Medusa on fire with my snaky hair sprouting from its clip and my black swamp creature eyes pouring down my face. I’d turn and run toward the parking lot if I weren’t afraid of tripping over my own feet and making a bigger fool of myself.
“Haley, I’m done,” Reed says. His eyes go sad, like how I’d imagined Dexter’s if someone stole that hot pink Frisbee. “You don’t have to fight me anymore. If you can get through Alston and A.J. and – Get through the other guys then Taylor’s yours. I’m not standing in your way.”
If Reed is surrendering, I’m another guy down. Alston is so preoccupied with Linzi that I doubt he even cares about fighting me off. He’s totally in this “just for the chicks.” I think I’ve proven I can handle A.J. more than anyone thought I could.
“Who is the fourth guy?” That’s the real question.
Reed inhales and looks past me. “You can meet him tonight. I owe you anyway. There’s this really awesome diner on the edge of town. I’m paying. Meet us here at seven?”

“It’s a date.”
