Teaser Tuesday -- Merch Girl

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone is able to play along, just do the following :)

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Top Ten Tuesday -- Top Ten Books I Read In 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme brought to you at The Broke and the Bookish!! Each week we will be releasing a top ten book related list for you all to enjoy!

I had a hard time narrowing this list down, so I decided to add series/sequels together so that would free up some space. Even though that helped, it was still hard to narrow them down because I read so many wonderful books this year. Some being indie authors, some being really well known books. So here is my tough to narrow down list :)

These are not in numerical order. I just kind of threw them all on the list!

Review: Mockingjay (re-read)

7260188Mockingjay
Author: Suzanne Collins
Release Date: August 24th, 2010
Publisher: Scholastic
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Pages: 390
Format: Hardcover, Bought

Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis:

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.

It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans -- except Katniss.

The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels' Mockingjay -- no matter what the personal cost.

My Review:

When I first read this book years ago, I hated it. I hated everything about it. I was even mad when I finished reading it. I wanted to write the author a letter to tell her how awful it was. I regret thinking that way.

I know a lot of different reads have hated this book, but from my experience, I was right in that category. Now that I have re-read the whole series, this book makes a little more sense to me this time around. I caught things in the other 2 books that didn't mean anything to me at the time but made differences in this book.

I now love this book and take back all my earlier hate. I used to hate the ending the most, I used to feel that she just threw it all together at the last minute. While I still feel like she could have given us more about who Katniss ends up with, I am still very happy with it all.

This books has A LOT of death in it. The death of many characters that you learn to love throughout the trilogy. Some you would expect, some catch you completely off guard. I cried this time around while I read the book. I sat and stared across my room at the wall while I reflected back on the book and what I just read. I had to force myself to get out of bed and walk around because I couldn't get my mind off the ending of the book.

I still had small issues with the book, but I am sorry to say I can't share them because they are spoilers and I don't want to do that to anyone who hasn't read it. Those issues are so small though that it doesn't change my rating I am now giving the book.

The characters, I fell in love with each and every one of them. My heart goes out to Peeta in this book, because man that boy doesn't get a break. Also, Katniss wins my heart. That poor girl goes through so much. Sometimes I hate her selfishness, but I am also someone with a huge heart, so I am more like Peeta who would do anything for Katniss, no matter what it did to me in return.

This book is set in a different setting. Yes, it is still within the districts so to speak, but not in the way as the other two books were written. But I like that about this book. I feel if it was more arenas or capitol scenes, then the trilogy would have felt more like a drag and less enjoyable to read.

My rating for this book when I first read it was a low 3. I loved the rest of the trilogy so I couldn't justify giving it less than a 3, but this time around it definitely gets a 5. Maybe I wasn't in the right mindset before, but I do understand now where she was going with everything and it was nice to end the trilogy with a smile on my face :) I hope all of you who haven't read this trilogy go out and pick it up and love it just as much as I do!

When having two powers makes you a Super and having none makes you a Normal, having only one makes you a sad half-superpowered freak.

It makes you a One.

Sixteen-year-old Merrin Grey would love to be able to fly – too bad all she can do is hover.

If she could just land an internship at the Biotech Hub, she might finally figure out how to fix herself. She busts her butt in AP Chem and salivates over the Hub’s research on the manifestation of superpowers, all in hopes of boosting her chances.

Then she meets Elias VanDyne, another One, and all her carefully crafted plans fly out the window. Literally. When the two of them touch, their Ones combine to make them fly, and when they’re not soaring over the Nebraska cornfields, they’re busy falling for each other.

Merrin's mad chemistry skills land her a spot on the Hub's internship short list, but as she gets closer to the life she always wanted, she discovers that the Hub’s purpose is more sinister than it has always seemed. Now it’s up to her to decide if it's more important to fly solo, or to save everything - and everyone - she loves.

Elias and Merrin are on the run.

After escaping the Biotech Hub, they thought they could breathe easy, or at least a little easier. But when bombs slam into the Social Welfare Hub only hours after their arrival, it becomes clear there's nowhere to hide - and no end to what Biotech will do to get them back.

Their last chance for safety and answers is the Clandestine Service Hub. CS has intel on the real, broader purpose behind Fisk’s experiments , and the newfound knowledge of the horrors hidden deep within Biotech’s walls sends Merrin back to recover a secret formula that could ruin the Supers’ world forever—and might just save the lives of the Biotech victims spiraling out of control.

Elias' sisters are counted among the victims of Fisk’s experiments, and if Elias can't find and help them, their powers will destroy them--sooner rather than later. Returning to the place it all began terrifies him, but with Fisk ready to make an example out of Merrin, and his sisters’ lives --and the lives of all Supers--hanging in the balance, he might not have a choice. If he can't find the courage to face his worst fears, Elias might lose more than his newfound powers.

He might lose everyone he loves.

1 Mathletics competition =
1 big mess

SIMPLIFY.

Ashley Price doesn’t have much in life after being bullied so hard she had to leave her old school to live with her aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. But the camera she borrowed from her best friend and secret crush Brendan, and her off the charts math abilities, make things a lot more bearable. Plus, since Brendan is the captain, making the school Mathletes team should be easy.

But when gorgeous new girl Sofia rolls in and steals Brendan, Ashley's place on the team, and her fragile foothold on the Mansfield Park Prep social totem pole, it’s on. Sofia is everything Ashley left her old school to escape. The only thing Ashley didn’t count on is Sofia’s sexy twin brother Vincent.

Vincent is not only the hottest boy in school, he’s charming, sweet, and he’s got his eye on Ashley. He’s also not taking no for an answer. There's no real reason Ashley shouldn't like Vincent, but with the
battle lines being drawn between her and Sofia, Ashley’s not sure which side he’s on. Or which side she wants him to be on.

She does know Sofia is trouble with a capital T, and she’s determined to make Brendan see it.

That's all I got this week!

Merry Christmas!

I decided to not do a Waiting on Wednesday this week and write a Christmas message instead.

I know Thanksgiving is supposed to be the time of the year where we say what we are thankful for, but for me, Christmas feels more appropriate.

I've had a wonderful year and it is only getting better. I got my blog up and running, graduated college, and got a new job. All 3 of those have brightened up my year so much that I can end the year in happiness. Last year, 2012, it wasn't the best year, so it is nice to be able to make up for that.

I am also thankful for my family, my puppy, and my boyfriend, which I wouldn't be able to survive without any of them. This is the first year in a long time that I actually had the money to be able to buy presents for the people in my life, so I am happy to be able to get my family things to show I appreciate them. I know you don't always have to get things, but I wanted to and I feel so good about it. I can't wait for them to open their presents and just have a wonderful day with those that matter most in my life.

With that said, that means I want to spend the day with all of you, too! Sadly, I am not able to go see all of you, so I wanted to come here and say Merry Christmas and thank you for being here for me. Without you all, there wouldn't be a Paradise of Pages. I am so thankful for each and every one of you and I can't wait to go into the new year with you!

I hope all of you got all the presents you wanted and I can't wait to read all the hauls that are going to be posted up here soon!

I am now off to spend the day with my family, which is the sole reason as to why I love Christmas so much. It is one of the only days throughout the whole year where I get to see my entire family together. I love them all so much but sadly life gets in the way a lot when it comes to spending time together.

I hope you all get to spend the time with your families! If you aren't able to, I hope you still get to talk to them and let them know you still love them, no matter how far away you are!

Merry Christmas to all of you :)
